Enjoying The Chaos

of life…with kids, school, and work

So, I did something wild and crazy the other day.

I have been playing around with the idea of joining Leukemia & Lymphoma Socitey team in training.  They are running the IronGirl 1/2 Marathon this Apirl very close to my home.

The fundraising scares me more than running the 13.1 miles.  With a $1500 mimimum commitment, could I really pull this off?  Who knows.

I ran the Maryland 1/2 back in May..and it was a DISASTER.  With limited training ( I sucked at following the training plan), horrible nutrition and SO MANY HILLS…I didn’t do as well as I had hoped when signing up.  Althought I did raise $700 toward the University of Maryland Greenbaum cancer center.

So when I received an email last week informing me that they would waive the $100 registration fee if I signed up by 1/8, I thought, how can I not sign up.  TNT gives you the option to drop out if you feel that you can’t raise the money required or pay the difference.

On Sunday night, I was about to go to sleep, but I picked up my phone and registered.  What do I have to lose, right?

I opted for the flex training.  With mine and PW’s schedules so crazy, I thought it would be best to get in the runs on my own.  I love the idea of having a coach to help me though this training.  Someone to hold me accountable for my runs.  I am very excited to get started!

I started my yoga practice back up..and I couldn’t be happier.  I took a begginer vinyasa class on Saturday..my hamstrings and shoulders feel great/sore (aren’t they the same thing?)  I am headed to a hot vinyasa class this evening at Charm City with Steph…so excited!

I am hoping to use this as a place to track my training and fundraising.  I have started a food journal and i am writing everything that goes in my mouth down :/  I am trying to shed a few lbs for my sister’s wedding in April, or atleast tone up.  Let the chaos begin:)

Reevaluation July 20, 2011

I officially started training for the Baltimore Running Festival 1/2 Marathon, on Monday.

Since the last 1/2 the only running I have done was a 5k at the end of June.  Due to not training properly, the 1/2 was hard and I cried from mile 8-13.1 due to the pain in my hip flexors.  When I left the race, the only thing running were my thoughts of, “How is this fun?  Who decides to become a runner at 35 years old?”

Well, I do.  I don’t have to be a fast runner.  I don’t ever plan to place in my age group (not until I am 60 and then I’ll take 3rd;)  I don’t have to have an under 2 hr 1/2 PR.  I don’t ever plan to run a marathon…*well not right now anyway*.

What I do have to do this time is follow a training schedule and fuel my body properly so that I can keep my body healthy.

I would like to lose a few lbs.  I would like to increase my endurance.  I would like to find a way to get in the zone.  I would like to finish the 1/2 in October with a smile on my face..or atleast without painful tears.

So, like I said, training started on Monday.

On Monday, I did some stretching, push ups and sit ups.

On Tuesday, I ran 2 miles on the treadmill.  I was suppose to run 3 but that it wasn’t happening on the dreadmill..UGH!

I have the hardest time running on the treadmill…I watch the numbers, I watch the little arrow going around the “track”, my knees hurt, I focus on my feet, on the person in front of me whose pants are falling down on the elliptical, or the girl who is talking on her cell phone next to me…2miles felt like 22…and I was only on it for 22 min…(told you I was a slow runner).

The plan is to do some cross training today.  Possibly some laps in the pool….I have to see if the weather and the kids cooperate:)

I have decided to follow Hal Higdon’s Novice 1/2 marathon training plan..we’ll see how it goes.

…to race day!!

That is right..at 8am on Sunday morning I will be running my first half marathon!

I ran 8 miles on Sunday and at mile 7 my hips decided they weren’t going any further.  For Mother’s day I wanted to head to the Farmer’s Market..but about 45 min there I had to get to the car ASAP!!  My legs just couldn’t go any further.  I layed in bed for about an hour just relaxing before heading my mom’s.

I’ll have to stop by later and post some Momma’s Day pics!!

I was lucky enough to spend the day will everyone I totally love.  Ditty, NP, KP and lil b went to the FM with me…while CAS slept at home…there was no way I could get the 16 year old out of the house @ 9am.

At the FM, NP presented me with a beautiful pair of earrings…he picked out a pair for me and his momma..I put them immediately!

I was given beautifully colored pics from my babies and a gift cert for a massage:)  Perfect gift the weekend before my half…if you ask me:)

I spent the rest of my days with my beautiful mother and sister.  They are two of my best friends, and my Sunday wouldn’t be complete without them.

They are calling for a 70% chance of scattered thrunderstorms on Sunday…UGH!!  Not looking forward to running my first 13.1 run in the pouring rain…especially with the chance of being struck by lightening:/ Yikes!!!

My Music Monday March 28, 2011

I don’t know about you..but I can not run without my iPod..it is my best friend and pushes me though all of my runs…I got a new-to-me iPod a bit ago, from my oldest, and just recently started putting songs on it…I have 7 songs total..lol

With my increasing mileage..i need more tunage…

So, I was thinking of starting a My Music Monday..and talk about the music I am adding to my playlist…I also need some suggestions of songs to keep me moving in May for my first half…

So..I thought I would let you in on what I am listening to when I run…let me warn you..it is a bit boring..but with everyone’s help..I may get some really awesome running music…

I always play these on a shuffle, but i’ll list them by artist

Rihanna

S&M

Only Girl in the World

Britney Spears

Gimme More

Hold it Against me

Beckah Shae

Here in this moment

Life

Ke$ha

Blow

and I usually cool down to Sarah Bareilles’ Gravity

by my next long run..of 6 miles this upcoming weekend I will add

JoLo’s new one…On the floor..this song makes me want to put on my dancin shoes and hit the club..SO BAD..she is amazing and I am so glad she is back!!

and I keep coming back to Britt’s new one..she never lets me down…till the world ends…is one of my favs right now..

I am a house junky…I love a great beat and if there are words to sing along..even better…dancing is in my bones and blood..when I hear music I can’t stop moving and I would swear that my heart pumps to the beat…I never understand it when people say they can not dance or have no rhythm because I don’t move to the music..it’s the music that moves me…

So give me some music suggestions so that I can build my playlist..and have some great songs to keep me moving..if you run, what is your power song??..if you don’t..what song makes you shake it whenever it comes on??

So, I am currently training for the Maryland Half in May..and my mileage is slowly increasing.  I was able to get out there and run 4 miles last weekend..YAY!!..and I am going for 5 this weekend.

My very good friend Karen went to Road Runner Sports a few months ago and told me I had to go for the Shoe Dog.  What Shoe Dog does is fetch the best pair of running shoes for you and your running style.

Let me just first say that all of the people who work at RRS are AMAZING.  They really took their time to listen to everything I had to say and make sure I got exactly what my feet, legs, body need in a shoe…

So first, Melissa asked me a few simple questions…Where do I run (outdoor, trail, indoor)?  How many miles a week do I run?  Am I dealing with any injuries at this time?  She plugged this all into the computer and displayed it on a very big screen.

Then Melissa took me over to the balancing board.  I stood there in my bare feet while the board sent important info to the computer.  What it told me was that I have an extremely high arch on my left foot..but my arch on the right foot is so high that I am putting a lot of pressure on my heel.

Now it was time to run on the treadmill at an easy jogging pace.  There is a camera set up to watch the back of my feet.  I set the treadmill at 4.0 and took a nice 20 second jog…What this showed me was that I am a pronator..and it is really bad on my right side.  You should have seen that arch.  She also told me that I should be running in a Stability + shoe..not the Neutral I have been running in for almost a year.

Then they took me over the balance bar and I stepped into these cushy blocks…this is where they take inserts..put them in a little oven thingy and then mold them to my feet.

It was not time to be handed over to Angie..the shoe expert.  I was surprised to find out that they recommend that you go up 1 – 1.5 sizes in your running shoe…giving some room for swelling and movement.  So, even though I was measuring at an 8.5-9..they put me in a 10.

Where they get you..is that they put the customized inserts into the shoes and have to try them on.  The shoes feel AMAZING..and then they hit you with the price of the insert..YIKES!!  The more I thought about it..it was a small price to pay so that I don’t experience anymore injuries…I am having some Achilles issues right now and was told that it may have to do with the wrong shoe.

I walked away purchasing these babies…Brooks Adrenaline GTS 10.

I also picked up one of these.  I have read many recommendations on sports bras for the larger chested women…I am a 38 D..and found many great ones on the Moving Comfort bras.  It has great support and after wearing already for my treadmill run…was so elated that I didn’t have Uniboob…YUCK!!..

RRS has a great VIP program that offers 10% off all merchandise purchased..So, I got all my purchases at a great price and will def go back for more.  I was like a kid in a candy store…I wanted one of everything.

Thank you to RRS..you have just gained a customer for life!!!   And thank you ditty for enduring a day of running stuff!!!

Amazing Race March 13, 2011

This afternoon, I ran the Kelly Shamrock 5k..image

This is us before the race…me, Lori and her husband Jeff, Karen and Nicki.  This was Lore, Jeff and Nicki’s first race ever..and let me just say…all three of them rocked it!!

My plan was to run the whole thing..but that didn’t happen.  I felt that the course was very hilly…and gave myself permission to walk up the hills…all in all I feel that I did great.  I was not incredibly happy with my time…but I am still a work in progess…and right now all that matters to me is that I finish.

The weather was amazing..and I felt a bit overdressed with a long-sleeved shirt on..but in the shade I would have been really cold…so I was glad I wore it.

I was really glad that the race didn’t start until 1:15pm…with the time change I was all out of whack this morning and never could have made it out of bed early to run…Plus the weather was amazing by the time we started.

I felt like a million bucks after the race…but all I wanted was a cheeseburger…

I ran home..grabbed the kids from ditty….and ran to 5 guys…

this is all I could think about from the time I hit the finish line..until I took the first bite…epic fail…it wasn’t that tasty…I only ate half and then threw the rest way…ditty would be so upset with me(sorry!!)

I have such a packed week coming up…two papers due..a midterm due…and then spring break next week…

Yeah…I wish…

I plan to do some much-needed cleaning..catch up on some reading..and get in some running…oh and to spend some much-needed time with ditty the  offspring…

I hope to keep up with posting this week…

Did you ever go anywhere amazing for Spring Break???

11 weeks to go February 24, 2011

So, I have 11 weeks to be in 1/2 marathon shape…am I crazy???  I think so.

I don’t think that I will be ready to run a 1/2 by mid-May, but I am determined to do my best.

I am a week behind due to the kids being sick and being sick myself at the beginning of the week.

I posted my training program a few day back…and according Mr. Higdon..I should be running 3miles with some strength training today…HAHAHAH…<—that is me truly laughing out loud.  I got in 1.78 miles today..but let me tell you…I ran the whole thing..and that is amazing for me.

I went and purchased the Nike+iPod the other day to help me log my runs.  I am hoping that this will motivate me to get moving…

I was going to go to the gym today and hop on a treadmill and run until my legs couldn’t carry me any longer.  The other day i did it, but I think because I was getting sick, I only pulled out 1 mile before dropping.  After I dropped lil b off at school I started thinking that it wasn’t really that cold out, and that if Heather and Ali can run in freezing cold weather, I can’t complain about 48°.   So, I threw on my headband and my gloves and hit the pavement.  It felt amazing!!  With the cold yucky weather we have been having, I have been hiding in the gym..and I forgot how much I love running outside.

I think what got me out there today was starting to read this, Run Like A Mother – How to get Moving and Not Lose Your Family, Job, or Sanity, by Dimity McDowell and Sarah Bowen Shea.  I am only on the Chapter 3 and have laughed out loud over a dozen time.

Being a mom of two little ones and one big one, I find it difficult to find the time to run.  Mornings are for fighting over what to wear to school, even though KP wears a uniform.  It’s about spilled milk, lunch box filling, book bag grabbing running to the bus stop before the bus leaves at 7:30am when he is supposed to stay there until 7:40am.  After dropping KP off..it onto dropping lil b off at daycare and getting myself to work in time so I can get in at least 36 out of the 40 hours I am supposed to work.  I sit at my desk, surrounded by co-workers that believe that wings, pizza and subs have their own space on the food pyramid and try to get at least 4-5 servings at one sitting, for 10 hours 4 days a week.  It usually feels like my days never end…some days I am lucky enough to be able to head home to say goodbye to ditty as he leaves for work, make dinner, spend some quality time with the little ones, baths, bed, homework….ok, so..there is no energy left after that.  Other days, I have to leave work and head to school to sit in class until 10pm.

When I started running it was a lot easier.  I wasn’t working full-time and I didn’t take it to seriously.  It was April of last year and after seeing that a few friends ran their first 5k, my interest was piqued.  I signed up for my first 5k in June.  Since then I have run 6 5ks and have loved most everyone.  I never did it for time and I never tried to PR in any of them, but this year I am hoping to step up my game.  I plan to put a lot of effort into my training and my 5k time has gone to imporve…but if not…I’ll be okay with that.

I love this book became so far..they know where I am coming from.  Although both authors started running before the age of 34, unlike me..lol, they just understand that sometime you would rather run then put the folded laundry away tonight…or that sometime..if the living room is messy..the world will not come to an end.  If you are a mom..and you love to run..it is a total must read.

I have to thank my friend Karen for giving it to me…alone with a pair of AWESOME socks and an extra tech t she had….I love that I have finally surrounded myself with strong like-minded women!!!  Thanks Kar!!!
